INSIGHT 08 · PAUL WELLENS

Give important decisions more time than the pressure of the moment.

A thought to pause on

Not every answer becomes better because it comes quickly.

"Carefulness need not apologise."
Paul Wellens

A recognisable situation

After a harsh e-mail, someone wants to immediately send an equally harsh reply. He waits until the next morning and reads his response again. The facts remain the same, but the tone becomes shorter, clearer and more useful.

A question to consider

Which response would you probably consider best later on if you first give yourself time now to think it over?

In plain words

Responding quickly sometimes feels like regaining control. But in moments of tension, a short pause is often not a weakness. It gives your mind time to reengage.

The nuance

Do not use taking time to indefinitely postpone necessary decisions.

Explanation in own words at What truly moves people and the speaker’s compass. Book p. 37; speaker’s compass p. 10.
