A recognisable situation
A brother makes the same sarcastic remark at every meeting. The sister reacts angrily every time, after which the conversation derails. One day she notices the pattern and responds not to the provocation but to the content. By doing so, she changes her own part of the pattern.
A question to consider
How do you maintain more freedom when you choose how to respond yourself, instead of letting the other person determine your reaction?
In plain words
People sometimes know exactly which button to press with each other. Freedom begins when you recognise that button and do not automatically give the same reaction.
The nuance
Not every influence is manipulation. People influence each other constantly. It is about becoming aware of your own reaction.
