INSIGHT 22 · PAUL WELLENS

Do not confuse a friendly gesture with real reconciliation

A thought to pause on

After a conflict, not only a warm moment counts, but especially whether behaviour changes sustainably afterwards.

"You may accept a friendly gesture without immediately deciding that everything is repaired."
Paul Wellens

A recognisable situation

After a severe argument someone suddenly becomes particularly friendly and says everything will be different. That can be a genuine first step. The question is whether weeks and months later there is also something changed in how people interact.

A question to consider

What gives you more certainty: one friendly moment, or behaviour that really stays different over a longer period?

In plain words

A good conversation can start repair. Repair becomes credible when new behaviour endures after the emotions of that moment have passed.

The nuance

Give genuine repair a chance. Testing sustainability is different from distrusting someone in advance.

Explanation in own words at What truly moves people and the speaker's compass. Book p. 93; speaker's compass p. 24.
