Learn to see what truly is. With or without pain.

A thought to pause on

Start with the facts. Only afterwards do you give them meaning.

"Perhaps you are stuck because you know very well how you would like the situation to be, but you cannot yet bear how it really is today."
Paul Wellens

A recognisable situation

A father wants the family home to remain in the family at all costs. At the same time, it turns out that none of the children want to live there and the maintenance is burdensome. The difficult moment is not the sale itself. It is acknowledging that the house no longer holds the same place in the family.

A question to consider

If you start from what really is today, and not from what you had hoped for, which choice then becomes clearer to you?

In plain words

I explain it like this: first we look at what really is. Only then do we decide what that means for you. Acknowledging a fact is not the same as liking it.

The nuance

Never make acceptance the same as approval. Someone can acknowledge a reality yet still find it painful or unfair.

Explanation in own words at What truly moves people and the speakers’ compass. Book p. 9; speakers’ compass p. 3.
