INSIGHT 33 · PAUL WELLENS

Let your thoughts rest when they no longer resolve anything.

A thought to pause on

Not every conversation must be resolved today. Sometimes silence preserves room for a better continuation.

"Thinking is a valuable tool, but not a place where you must live continuously."
Paul Wellens

A recognisable situation

After a long family meeting, one point remains stuck. Everyone is tired and new arguments add nothing further. Instead of forcing an artificial agreement, the facilitator says: "We will leave this point to rest today and revisit it when everyone has had time to think about it."

A question to consider

What can become clearer if you do not try to resolve this today, but let it rest for a while?

In plain words

Silence can be an active choice. You do not have to close every open point immediately. Sometimes clarity only arises when people are given time to think without more words.

The nuance

Never use silence as a means of power, threat, or a way to withhold contact.

Explanation in own words at What truly moves people and the speaker's compass. Book p. 137; speaker's compass p. 35.
