To begin with
Living independently also means knowing who pays what, what belongs to whom and where to find help.
“The act must also be proportional to what you protect.”

A budget that also recognises the hidden costs
Start from what you can truly spend net. Note rent, energy, food, transport, care, insurances and subscriptions. Divide annual costs by twelve. Reserve a separate place for unexpected expenses. As an entrepreneur, your turnover is not your private income.
How much should I definitely save?
There is no amount that is achievable or sufficient for everyone. Start from your fixed costs, income security and possible assistance. Begin with a feasible reserve and adjust it if your situation changes.
Cohabitation: make money arrangements visible
Record how you divide rent, groceries and fixed costs. Keep proof of major purchases. If one partner pays more or lends money to the other, specify whether it is a contribution, loan or gift. Have important agreements legally reviewed.
Are we automatically equally protected because we live together?
No. Cohabiting de facto, legal cohabitation and marriage have different consequences. Be sure to discuss protection in the event of death, debts and the end of the relationship, especially with regard to a joint purchase.
Parents' money and standing surety
Financial assistance can be a gift, loan or guarantee. That distinction determines what is expected later. A parent who acts as guarantor assumes a real obligation. Discuss the amount, term, repayment and what happens if problems arise.
My parents are contributing to our house. Does that automatically make it my partner's property too?
That depends on the agreements and the purchase structure. Discuss who the assistance is intended for and how it will be handled before making an offer and payment. Keep proof of the origin of the money.
Studying, working or temporarily without work
Graduating, starting work and moving can each have consequences for rights and administration. Register with VDAB in good time after your studies if you are looking for work. Ask your Groeipakket payer and your health insurance fund separately what changes.
Do I have immediate entitlement to benefits after my studies?
Registration with VDAB is not the same as an awarded benefit. Have VDAB and your paying institution check your current conditions, deadlines and situation.
Digital administration and fraud
Use unique passwords and two-step verification. Keep contracts and certificates in a secure place and ensure there is a backup. Verify unexpected payment requests via a contact detail you find yourself.
I clicked on a suspicious link. What now?
Follow the steps from Safeonweb. Contact your bank immediately if you shared your banking details or lost money. Keep messages and proof of payments. Change involved passwords via the genuine website.

FROM READING TO PREPARATION
Already a first answer.
Where do I start if I become independent for the first time?
Start with what will change soon: your home, work, income or family situation. Open the related guide and use the checklist to make a list of what is arranged and what still needs an answer.
Must I arrange everything at once?
First distinguish between arrangements with a date and issues you still want to investigate. Keep contracts and confirmations together. Ask the relevant service which information they need and note the next step.
Can I involve a parent or trusted person?
You can review the information together and prepare your questions. Indicate who you want to involve in a conversation. It helps if you formulate in advance what you want to achieve and what you have doubts about.
